Pre-Raphaelites and Frank Gehry in Dundee?

Dundee contains some true hidden gems and these always become apparent during Doors Open Days. This year I went to St. Stephens Church in Broughty Ferry to be wowed by a complete set of stained glass windows made by Edward Burne-Jones.

They are absolutely stunning in terms of colour and detail – I felt inspired but I haven’t acted on it yet!

The detail particularly in the foliage is immediately telling of the Arts and Craft Movement, and I love the way the sky and water are depicted. The blue and red glass singing against each other was also quite a sight!

I followed this with a visit to the only Frank Gehry building in the UK (to my knowledge) – the Maggie’s Centre at Ninewells Hospital.

The centre has the extremely important roll of providing advice and support for people with cancer and their families, so it is not a building which is open that often to the general public. It is however an amazing little building with beautiful spaces inside and out providing seclusion for visitors. It also turns out that there is now an Anthoy Gormley statue on site too, so it is quite an artistic corner of Dundee!

Basically Dundee never fails to surprise and often gets written off too quickly by people who live outside its boundaries – Doors Open Day is vital to promoting what the city has to offer!

It was a lovely weekend up here too – sunshine both days! Total change today though and I am now all layered up, with the heating on, watching the rain batter down and listening to the wind gather pace. I think it’s a hot chocolate and Downton Abbey night!

  1. Gorgeous stained glass and I like that centre – something very intimate and comforting about it…
