At the weekend I headed to the McManus Galleries to catch a couple of their exhibitions. Unfortunately photography was not allowed so you have some shots of the exterior instead, which is pretty impressive regardless of what is inside. However the current exhibitions are worth a visit.
The first exhibition I looked at was ‘Modern Masters in Print’ and is a touring V&A exhibition containing prints by Van Gogh, Matisse, Dali and Warhol. Dundee’s link with the V&A is already proving beneficial to the city; ten years ago I would never have thought that I would be able to see Warhol’s Marilyn prints in Jute City! I think what is also great is that you get to see these works of art close up and you do not have to fight with crowds, as you do when you visit the major galleries in London.
The second exhibition is taken from Dundee City Council’s permanent collection of contemporary art and is called ‘re:new’. Many of these works have been on display before in DCA but it was great to see them again, particularly the lightbox photographs of the Tay Rail bridge.
I had a lovely afternoon at McManus; it is a calm space filled with fascinating works of art and interesting objects. It was also good to see it being used on Sunday. Anyway back to this week and only two more days to go until the weekend (yes, I’m counting). The Literary Festival started today and I have tickets for a number of events at the weekend which I’m really looking forward to. Hope you have a good week and have something nice planned for the weekend too!
